In the ancient history of India it was know that many saints, scholars, and gurus wore these Kharams for the reason that they could give peace of mind and control of the senses.
This is achieved by the wooden peg between the toes which massages specific pressure points. The wood is considered to be one of the pure elements of the earth which keeps impurities from entering through the soles of the feet.
It was considered that those who wore these Kharams were generally on the path of righteousness and purification.
On ancient sculptures and relief's in India, Gods and demigods are usually depicted as wearing Kharams as well.
